Sougia Holiday Travel Guide

Sougia is a small charming fishing village on the south west side of Crete.  It attracts tourists from all over Europe every year, but never gets busy or full of tourists so again like most villages in this area its perfect for a quiet uninterrupted holiday.

The beach of Sougia is a fine pebble and shingle, and is a long winding beach so never really fills up, part of the beach is a clothing optional nudist beach, so make sure if your heading down on the beach you know which side your on.

The village of Sougia has some lovely Greek Tavernas and you will easily find somewhere that caters for your tastes.  To get to Sougia is best to hire a car, although there are buses than run from Chania on an irregular basis.  Its about 75km from the town f Chania, so your best setting out early to get to this wonderful fishing village.

What to do in Sougia

The first thing most people do is head for the beaches, which are well served with sunbeds and umbrellas.  There is the occasional beach bar serving up all you need in drinks and snacks.

If you are more adventurous you can take a leisurely walk to Lissos, a forgotten town, which although significant in times gone by is largely just ruins, overgrown and home to the local sheep and goats.  Further afield you can visit Paleohora and Sfakia or walk the Samaria Gorge.

Heading back to the village of Sougia after a long day on its beach or walking round the hills and mountains ,means you will need to get something to eat and relax with a glass of wine and ponder your next trip or sightseeing excursion.

There are some excellent Tavernas within Sougia, try the little Taverna of Anchorage, or Galini if your looking for a mix of European and Greek food.  A lot of people have come back from Sougia with the recommendation to visit the restaurant of Kyma, renowned for its excellent fresh fish dishes, or you have Livikon beach front Taverna which does some amazing Greek dishes.

Sougia General Information

There is a local boat owner known as Captain George who will arrange boat trips for any amount of people, whether you want to take a fishing trip or visit secluded coves and beaches on the southern peninsula of Crete.

To get in contact with Captain George its best to visit his hotel within Sougia, a lovely set of apartments that regularly fill up in the high season.  There are a few more hotels within Sougia and they can be booked through the internet or locally.
