Holidays To Sfakia - Travel Guide

Location Of Sfakia in Crete

Sfakia is located on the south west part of Crete and is made up of lots of quaint little villages dotted all over the coast and mountainous regions.
Sfakia is surrounded by the  White Mountains mountain range, or Madares, as they are known to the locals in Crete with 110 peaks and the biggest gorges. The area remains the most un spoilt in Crete.

Sfakia - Untouched beauty and a warm welcome.

Sfakia is considered one of the few places in Greece to never have been fully occupied by foreign powers and invaders. A 2001 census of the population shows 2,446 inhabitants living on a land area of 467.589 km², it is the largest and least densely populated municipality on the island of Crete.
Sfakia is great for those looking to find amazing views, traditional towns and un spoilt beaches.

Hora Sfakion (commonly called Sfakia) the seaside capital of the area of Sfakia, is a coastal village located on the Southwestern coast of Crete, 70 km from the city of Chania and 150 km from Heraklion.

The road from Chania to Sfakia crosses the island from North to South, through the village of Vrises. At the 33rd km off the road Chania-Rethymnon we leave the main Highway and follow a paved side road to Vrises. From this village starts an impressive trip to the east side of the White Mountains crossing the mountainous area of Sfakia and ending up at Hora Sfakion by the Libyan sea. Half way from Vrises to Hora Sfakion is the fertile plateau of Askifou, surrounded by high mountain peaks.

From Askifou plateau to Hora Sfakion is the most impressive part of the route. The road hugs the western slope of the wonderful gorge of Imbros and the view to the gorge and to the Libyan sea is breathtaking.

The best thing to do in Sfakia is relax on its un spoilt beaches, but to get out and about bird watching is very enjoyable in this area with many native and rare birds.  Take out your fishing rod and follow the locals to their favourite fishing spots at the harbour or of the rocks.  There are plenty of little churches dotted around the area of Sfakia and these can easily be found on maps of Crete.

For the more adventurous there is of course Samaria and Imbros Gorge which can be accessed through most of the summer season.

Sfakia Coastal Views

The beaches of Sfakia

There are many beaches in Sfakia which do not see the numbers of tourists of the northern coast.  The sea and the beaches are very clean in the Sfakia area. There is a large beach in one of the village’s bays, as well as several other beaches within walking distance.  One notable beach is Llingas beach which is lovely and sandy with clear blue waters great for snorkelling and dropping a rod into to catch some of the local bream and mullet.

Sfakia is definitely and explorers paradise and as you drive round the rocky coast you will find many inlets and beaches you can walk down too.  So the best recommendation is to grab a car and explore the coast at your own pace.

Loutro and Samaria Gorge

Accessible only by boat from Sfakia is Loutro, a small seaside village with some archaeological ruins, a few houses, small hotels and tavernas. Loutro is car-free, you have to park your car in Hóra Sfakíon or Paleohóra. In the north of Sfakia is the fertile plain of Askyfou.

The Sfakia region is crossed by many gorges, among which the famous Samaria Gorge, which run from north to south and all end in the sea. Many of them can be walked, and several even by inexperienced walkers. The region still is inhabited by rare animals, like vultures and eagles, and the kri-kri (or agrimi), the wild Cretan goat. Sfakia borders to the Libyan Sea, which is inhabited by a diminishing fish population, but occasionally shows dolphins, and even whales.  More information on Samaria Gorge can be found here, and if your interested in scuba diving you can find information on it here.
