The return of holidays abroad

Where are you going for your summer holiday this year? Since the Government announced that we are officially out of recession, at least for now, consumers across the country have welcomed the news by booking a holiday. According to figures released by lowcostholidays.com, summer holiday bookings are up 150% year on year as we say goodbye to the shortlived 'staycation' and hola or bonjour to a week in the sun - real sun.

Now that the Pound has made up some much needed ground against the Euro, holidays in the Euro-zone are no longer out of the question. Last year, travel experts were advising us to either stay at home and reacquaint ourselves with the British seaside or else head East and enjoy the delights of the former Eastern-Bloc countries that are yet to flirt with the Euro.

This means that good old favourite Greece, despite its recent economic and currency woes is back on track as a hot-spot for us Brits this summer. Crete seems to be a real winner, and holidays to the beautiful and historic island are up a massive 250% year on year.

These increases aren't just because we have regained our appetite for foreign holidays, it is because hotel and air-fare prices have decreased. Last summer hurt the travel industry badly. Overall booking numbers were down, airports felt like ghost towns, hotels had more staff than guests and resorts that rely heavily on tourism were deserted.

So this year, the travel industry has had to become more aggressive and tactical. To entice us back to the warm waters of the Med, airlines and hoteliers have all been slashing prices for all travel periods except peak school holiday weeks. This makes a 5-star all inclusive a dream as it is now at a 3-star price.

Crete has become particularly popular because of its warm climate, spectacular coastline, family-friendly hotels, romantic settings, ancient landmarks and captivating, laidback culture. There are not many places where you can have a beach holiday enjoying crystal clear waters, miles of white sand and even some palm trees yet still take days off to visit Minoan ruins, Venetian fortresses, old mosques, Byzantine monastaries and Zeus' birthplace.

Although part of Greece, the island should be viewed as a country in itself. It has its own unique take on Mediterranean and Greek culture, local specialities when it comes to food and scenery that for such a small place can't be beaten in the rest of Greece.
