Rethymnon has some amazing beaches, some stretching off into the far distance that
you can spend the day relaxing on, others are smaller more private coves where you
might find yourselves the only people on the beach that day.
This beach guide covers
the most popular beaches of Rethymnon and the surrounding area. The restaurant guide
marks out a few choice restaurants to eat on the Old Venetian harbour.
If you have
paid a visit to a beach that you loved and don’t find on here you can submit your
beach review and pictures through Holidays2Crete.com and we will credit you with
the article and pictures.
Another beautiful beach lying just 4km to the east of Rethymnon just past Missiria
beach, with the option to rent sun beds and umbrellas. On Platanes beach you will
find many Tavernas serving great snacks and drinks daily. This beach is not too
overcrowded and you can enjoy a relaxing day on the beach.
Gerani beach is situated just 6km from the town of Rethymnon to the West. It doesn’t
have as many facilities as some of the organised beaches on the page, but its an
excellent area for snorkelling in Rethymnon. With great rocky outcrops and stunning
scenery this is a popular small beach with the more adventurous.
Episkopi beach is further afield, situated 12km west of Rethymnon just off the National
road to Chania. This beach does have a few facilities dotted around the beach but
not in all places, you will find sun beds, umbrellas and cafes on certain points
of the beach and the rest of the beach will be clear.
You can find Missiria beach just a short bus ride away from Rethymnon town, it sits just 3km east of the main town and offers an excellent clean beach with sun beds, umbrellas and a beach bar or two.
The two videos to the right are a short example of the beaches of Rethymnon taken by holiday makers. The first video is Rethymnon Town beach in late November, so if you wonder why its empty that's the reason. The other is the sun setting over Platanias beach.
The beaches in Rethymnon are very well kept and kept clean on a daily basis, the seas are warm even in early Spring and Autumn. Your best et for seeing what the prefecture of Rethymnon has to offer is to hire a car and just go where the map takes you, drive along coastal roads and stop at quiet or secluded bays.
The main harbour of Rethymnon has a wealth of lovely fish restaurants and Tavernas, the best we found out of the many Taverna’s in this are would have to be Samaria Taverna and O Zefyros, both these restaurants offer freshly caught fish daily, with reasonable prices and excellent efficient service. If you move into the main centre of Rethymnon or into the back alleys then look for the Rimondi Fountain mentioned earlier and you will find some lovely little cafes serving up coffee, tea, frappe and a lovely serving of Greek yogurt and honey.
The cafes you can choose from around the Rimondi Fountain area are Kyria Maria,
Agrimia and Zanfoti Kafenío. Also try Taverna Fountain close by to taste excellent
Greek cuisine. If your looking for a bit more Greek culture while you eat or drink
then try the Café Vasiliko, this little cafe usually has live Greek music during
the summer months and is well worth a visit.
