Malia Travel Guide

Malia is situated in Crete on the east side and hotter part of the island, just 40 minutes away from Heraklion airport.  You can get holidays and flights to Malia from most local travel agents or by booking a cheap deal online.

Malia is the party resort of Crete and the Mediterranean and is open from April till October every year.  The main strip is called Malia beach Road and is jammed with clubs and pubs playing the best of RnB, Funky House, Dance and Garage.

The beach of Malia stretches right through the town and offers excellent crystal clear blue waters and is mainly sandy through-out.  The beach is crammed with beach bars, many with resident DJs and amazing events like Fight Club, Twice as Nice and many more....

Why a Malia holiday?

Malia is the clubbers paradise and has been popular with groups since 1990.  People mainly come to Malia for the excellent nightlife where all clubs offer free entry and “Buy one get one free” on drinks meaning you can get hammered for next to nothing.  You will also find that Malia, Crete and Greece in general is much more friendlier than Spain and you feel more secure.

The town of Malia has it all though, you can have hectic and drunken nights, going on bar crawls with your reps through the night and relaxing at your hotel pool or Malia beach during the day.  Malia has some great beaches where you can top up your holiday tan, with every beach having its own unique style of beach bar.

You can hire mopeds and quad bikes and travel around the area of Malia and visit quiet beaches and interesting sights, these are quite cheap to rent but you must be careful as driving in Malia is different from the UK.

The best time to visit Malia?

If your thinking of taking a holiday to Malia then you need to know what to expect at the time of season you go on holiday.  In April and May in Malia you will find it very friendly and chilled out, this is when the workers arrive in Malia and not everywhere is open.  Malia in April and May is how it should be all season.

Moving into June and July the resort is much busier and everywhere has started to open up, all the clubs are open and the bar crawls and free bars are kicking in with the likes of 18-30's, freestyle and twenty's.  As it gets to the end of July and into August Malia is at its busiest and can get very crazy.

Moving into September and October you will see the resort slowly shutting down and getting quieter, and this is where you will find most older groups start to arrive in Malia, usually a few younger families and groups of girls and lads in their mid to late 20’s.

A warning to people visiting Malia at anytime is to beware of the little kids you see on the streets, they play drums and beg for money and do little tricks but they are gypsy kids and are there to pick pocket you, if you get surrounded by gypsies selling roses get your hands in your pockets and hold onto your phones and wallets.

What to do in Malia

Apart from going out and getting drunk, going clubbing and relaxing on the beach there is so much more you can do in Malia.  Have a look at the Malia Daytime Guide and Malia Nightlife Guide for a run down of the best things to do in Malia.

If you want to explore further then you can try visiting
Malia Palace or even hiring a quad and driving into Krassi or Mohos where you will find great views over Malia, friendly locals and very cheap food and bottles of freshly brewed Raki from just 2 euro.

If your looking to get drunk, and spend the least amount of money possible then you have to try the Factory Free bar, its held every Thursday and you can buy tickets from the street sellers or direct at the factory.  The night is one to remember with unlimited free drinks for 2 hours, the infamous Malia Dream boys and a pole dancing competition plus loads of different drinking games with great prizes.

There is also a booze cruise run in Malia, which is completely independent from the tour operators, its a full day out on a boat around the east of the island, with fun drinking games and a top Malia DJ playing the latest and greatest tracks.  You can find more information on this at Altino and Charlie's Travel in Malia.
