Gerani Holidays Travel Guide
Gerani is close to the village of Platanias, but not
as crowded and developed. Its still a small village with a wealth of hotels and
restaurants to spend the night. There are buses that run frequently to the village
of Gerani, or you could hire a car to get there as its only 17km from Chania.
Its known locally as Kato Gerani or lower Gerani translated into English, the reason for this being there is another village of Gerani which sits above in the mountains, this is known as Pano Gerani or upper Gerani.
The beaches of Gerani have been awarded the “Blue Flag” beach award on a yearly basis, and due to the constant care and attention given by the locals, it looks set to be awarded it again.
Gerani General Information
If your looking for a relaxing beach holiday then Gerani is definitely for you, the
beaches here are a mix of sand, shingle and pebble and the seas are warm and clear.
You will find watersports and volleyball available on a daily basis and a beach
bar or two catering for all your snack and drinking needs.
Due to the size of the
village the only nightlife you will find here is the chatter of people in cafes and
Tavernas late on into the night. There are no clubs in the town but the resort of
Platanias lies just 2km away and is easily reachable by taxi.
In Gerani you have
the best of both worlds, you can relax on un spoilt and quiet beaches during the
day, head off to Platanias during the night or just sit and talk to the locals in
a Taverna in Gerani.
Gerani Caves
One of the most notable sights in this area has to be Gerani caves, they lie about
6km from the town of Rethymnon and have evidence of prehistoric interest and use.
They have been used over the centuries and to find the caves just follow the sign
posted areas -
There have been numerous finds in these deep
and historic caves, from which you can see them on show at the museum of Rethymnon
in Rethymnon itself. You can also explore this fantastic scenery of Crete, try a
day trip to hike Samaria Gorge, or visit the small villages of Sfakia and Loutro.
This
area of Crete has some of the best beaches, including Kissamos, Gramavoussa peninsula
and Balos beach. The easiest way to explore the west of Crete is by hiring a car
from the likes of holiday autos.
