Starting off in Chania airport, one of the first
places to head is east to Souda bay, a natural harbour and also the site of the WWII
cemetery which is well kept and very peaceful. After make your way from Souda bay
to Rethymnon to see the imposing Venetian fortress and pick up some excellently crafted
gold and silverware, or just to relax on its long sandy beaches.
Heading back to the
west side, another must see place is the amazing Gramavoussa peninsula, which is
one of the most photographed beaches in Crete, also just to the south of this is
Elafonisi beach.
Two firm favourites with independent travellers are the tiny fishing
villages of Sfakia and Loutro, park up in Sfakia and make your way on foot around
the corner to Loutro or catch the local ferry service.
Exploring the east of Crete by car
Arriving at Heraklion airport, the first and most
popular place to go has to be the ruins of Knossos palace, from there many people
choose to visit the small village of Fodele, with its magnificent orange and lemon
groves.
Moving to the far east of the island, pass through the Lassithi Plateau, pick
up some wine and home made Raki from Krassi and see the stunning windmill covered
plateau. After Lassithi and in the same district you will find Agios Nikolaos and
Elounda overlooking the stunning peninsula which encapsulates Spinalonga island.

further west finds you near Sitia and Palekastro, and just 20 minutes drive or so
sees you reach the wonderful palm tree forested beach of Vai.
