Crete Cruise Holidays
The island of Crete is the perfect island to visit when your
taking a cruise around the Greek islands. There are a few companies who offer cruises
around the Aegean and the Greek islands and almost every cruise itinerary includes
visiting one of the ports in Crete.
Cruises normally include the island of Crete
and they will stop off in one or two main ports in Crete, the first port of call
will normally be Heraklion. Heraklion is a great mixture of traditional and modern
Cretan culture and architecture. You will find modern building blending seamlessly
with the older parts of town.
The port is great for small cafes and local Tavernas
and you can explore the local Heraklion markets and find some excellent local produce
include fresh honey, wine and the local drink of Raki. If its duty free you are
after on your stop off then Heraklion is well served with duty free perfume stores
and plenty of shops selling wine and spirits.
Within Heraklion you will also find
the museum of Knossos, holding all the important finds and frescos of Knossos Palace.
The capital city is also home to many other museums and a great place to visit in
the municipal gardens.
If your only in Crete for the day, you can visit the palace
of Knossos, the home of the Minotaur and King Minos, the site is the second most
visited place in Greece after the Acropolis.
If you don’t get to visit Heraklion when visiting Crete for the day then it may be
the picturesque port of Agios Nikolaos or Ag Nik for short. The wonderful town sits
on the eastern side of Crete and has been built around the famous bottomless lake,
its here you will find a wealth of small cafes and bars serving up delicious snacks
and cool drinks and cocktails.
You may even be lucky enough to join the cruise to
Spinalonga, or go on the Knossos Palace sightseeing tour. If sightseeing isn't your
thing and you just want to enjoy the fantastic Cretan sunshine then relax on the
soft sands of Kalo Chorio or one of the many secluded coves around the area.
Make
sure if you book a cruise around the Greek islands that you have Crete on the itinerary
and you wont be disappointed.

Taking a cruise from Crete to Santorini
For those who have chosen Crete for a week
or two holiday then you can do something a little different and book a cruise to
Santorini for a day trip or overnight stay. Santorini cruises can normally be taken
from either Heraklion port or Rethymnon port.
There are a few companies which offer
a day cruise to Santorini, you have the Flying Cat which takes roughly an hour and
45 minutes to get the port of Santorini. You also have the Golden Prince cruise
ship which takes a little longer but allows you to relax and have breakfast on board
and take the optional extras of guided tours around Santorini.
Both options get you
to Santorini with plenty of time to explore the island and experience everything
this wonderful island has to offer, you normally return to Heraklion or Rethymnon
in the early evening at 7 or 8 pm. Dinner is usually optional on the return journey
but its quite a long day so we heartily recommend getting the dinner on the Golden
Prince ship.
The island of Santorini is one of the most photographed islands in Greece
and as you can see by the photographs on the right hand side is a beautiful island.
When you visit the island of Santorini we strongly recommend choosing at least one
guided tour as it allows you to gain more information on the island and the fantastic
community here.
You can visit the Thira which has a wealth of shops, cafes and restaurants
to explore and enjoy. You can also visit Oia which is a smaller version of Thira
and offers a quieter place but still with some excellent shops an stalls to pick
up some bargain local produce and gifts. Remember that Santorini is an inactive
volcano and the villages are all perched on the top of this volcanic island offering
stunning views over the Aegean Sea.
If you've finished your sightseeing and present
buying for loved ones at home then head down to Red Beach, one of the most popular
beaches of the island, with red sand and pebbles shelving gently into the warm sea.
There are plenty of other beaches on the island including Oia beach, Kamari beach
and Perissa beach to name a few.
