Travel Tips
Getting the best from car hire abroad
1. Choose the car that suits your needs. What
we mean by this is that if your a couple then opt for a small car that's economical
on petrol rather than a flashy sports car or large off road jeep. If your a family
of four then get a car to suit that rather than opting for a 6 seater “just in case”
2.
If your travelling for a week then opt for one of the bigger international car companies
like Holiday Autos, Hertz, or Europcar as you know you will have the support you
need if anything goes wrong and it wont cost the earth. If your travelling for more
than a week sometimes its better to choose a local company but beware that you may
not have breakdown support or insurance covered in the cost.
3. ALWAYS go round when
you pick up the car and agree and sign off the damage with the agent, even if it
seems a tiny scratch or scuff point it out and don’t be afraid to tell them to write
I down or take a picture. One of the most common scams by some car agencies is to
charge you for damage that you didn’t make because you didn’t notice when you picked
up the car.
4. Always compare prices of car hire and make sure you know what it includes.
Use the Holidays2Crete car hire comparison or other major comparison sites. Visit
the retailers website and check they don’t have any special deals available on that
day. Check voucher codes to see if you can get another 10 or 20% off the prices.
5.
Don’t get stung by local travel agents selling expensive petrol or believe them when
they say there is a petrol strike on this is an easy way to sell you petrol at inflated
prices.
6. Make a note of the nearest petrol station to the rental place when dropping it
off on a like for like basis or full tank so you pay the cheapest petrol and don’t
have to fall back on the agents inflated petrol prices.
7. And through all the terms
and conditions if your booking car rental online so you know if there's any penalties
for no shows if you miss flights or get delayed. Are there additional fees for additional
drivers or can other named drivers be added at no cost? Always note down the companies
local office number in the country your visiting.
8. Have a look at the accident and accidental damage waivers, sometimes they are
worth taking if the excess is high.
9. Always book car hire using a credit card when
booking online to make sure you covered in the event of agent failure.
10. When dropping
off the car make sure you take all your personal belongings and made sure the car
is in the same condition as you picked it up.
